Hello, I’m Michelle Read, a certified Personal Trainer and virtual physiotherapist based in McBride, BC, Canada. I want to share my personal journey with cervical dystonia and the incredible impact of physical therapy, particularly Dr. Farias’ innovative approach. Through my own experiences, I’ve come to understand the potential for hope and healing for those living with this challenging condition.

My Background and Diagnosis

I graduated from the UBC Physical Therapy Program in 1991 and spent 15 years working in private practice, specializing in orthopaedics. My career has taken me through diverse settings, including working with adults with developmental disabilities and providing care in community and acute care environments. Alongside my physiotherapy career, I’m also a certified Personal Trainer.

In 2008, my life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with cervical dystonia. At first, my treatment primarily involved Botox injections, which provided some relief. However, my journey towards true recovery began in 2017 when I discovered Dr. Farias’ program.

Dr. Farias’ Innovative Approach

Dr. Farias’ approach to treating cervical dystonia through physical therapy is groundbreaking. It revolves around incremental task conditioning, a method that guides patients away from problematic movement patterns towards healthier alternatives. This approach incorporates strength training, repetitive task performance, and highly individualized therapy tailored to each patient’s unique needs.

The Benefits of Physical Therapy in Cervical Dystonia Neurorehabilitation

Physical therapy in cervical dystonia neurorehabilitation has proven to be a game-changer for me and many others. Here are some key benefits:

  1. Improved Motor Function: Physical therapy helps patients regain control over their muscle movements, leading to improved motor function and reduced dystonic symptoms.
  2. Enhanced Quality of Life: By addressing deficits, improving flexibility, and enhancing strength, physical therapy can significantly enhance a patient’s overall quality of life.
  3. Individualized Care: Each patient’s journey with cervical dystonia is unique, and physical therapy is tailored to their specific condition, preferences, and lifestyle, maximizing the potential for successful outcomes.
  4. Long-Term Relief: Physical therapy offers sustainable improvements by gradually introducing and reinforcing positive changes in movement patterns.

Will Dr. Farias’ Recovery Program help my Cervical Dystonia?

Since 2018, more than 8,000 Dystonia patients worldwide have created accounts in our program. We are pleased to report that many of our users affected by cervical Dystonia, who have diligently followed the program for a year or more, have experienced a reduction in their symptoms, including a remarkable decrease in Cervical Dystonia pain, increased mobility in the neck, the recovery of the ability to walk, a reduction in Cervical Dystonia balance and visual symptoms, and improvement in their emotional well-being. Some of our members consider that they have attained full recovery after a year of practice, while others have continued their training for several years, gradually reducing their symptoms and improving their health and quality of life.

How Neuroplasticity can help you recover from Cervical Dystonia

Understanding Neuroplasticity is crucial in Cervical Dystonia therapies, enabling the repair of cortical and subcortical circuits, integrating alternative areas for modified functions, and aiding recovery from brain injuries. Neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt, is pivotal for cognitive and physical well-being. Dr.Farias’ Neuroplastic Training uses simple movements to optimise vital brain circuits making it possible to recover from Cervical Dystonia. Patients following our training protocols have experienced unprecedented improvements and full recoveries from Cervical Dystonia.

In Cervical Dystonia treatment, acknowledging the brain’s capacity to modify itself is key. The cerebral cortex, genetically predetermined for specific functions, can be modulated through experience and learning.

Physiological plasticity involves changes allowing the recovery of affected functions. This includes creating new synapses, functional reorganization, incorporating new areas into established networks, and recruiting different regions to compensate for losses. The brain adapts through mechanisms like dendrite sprouting, functional reorganisation, and activating redundant pathways.
